Mike Corden Collection
Mike Corden contacted me sometime ago via the website and offered to lend me his collection of 35mm slides that he took whilst he was an apprentice the Bowater Steamship Company. I am sure you will agree they are excellent photographs and give a real feel of what it was like to sail on these ships, from freezing cold conditions at Corner brook to swimming in the sea in Port Everglades.

I have put the pictures in the order that Mike had them and added his notes as written.

Woodpulp in the hold. I don`t know if this is Holsmund, Sweden or Charleston, South Carolina USA. In both cases it was also loaded on the deck, and we used to loose most of it in bad weather on the way home
Nicolas Bowater. I think this was in Philadelphia.
Nicolas Bowater in the East River, New York, taken from the Brooklyn Bridge.(One of my favourites,Ian. H)
Another view of Nicolas Bowater on the East River, New York. Taken from the Brooklyn Bridge.
Some of the thousands of ships built in the war by America, lined up in the river at Newport News on the way to Richmond, Virginia, waiting to be scrapped.
Homeward bound from the states, all spruced up. Either Margaret or Sarah(Steam winches).
Looking down to Cornerr Brook, with the frozen estuary in the distance
Sarah Bowater, ice on deck.

Sanitation Pier, East River, N.Y. This was the pier next to our berth where the barges took all N.Y garbage to sea to be discharged.
Canadian icebreaker Labrador taking us into Corner Brook.

Gangway lowered to enable us to play football whilst waiting for icebreaker.
Finnish icebreaker Sampo taking us into Kasko, Finland.Sarah Bowater.
Iceberg, roughly same co-ordinates as Titanic.
